About 1153 Fine Art

1153 Fine Art is an online art space that was primarily established to showcase the extensive collection of Jeunne Schoales’ paintings and prints yet has now expanded to include many other carefully chosen artworks from our collection. There will be new paintings, sculptures, and handmade objects by other artists and artisans added on an ongoing basis.

It is our belief that living with art enriches one’s life in many ways and has the potential to provide us with daily access to beauty, inspiration and intellectual nourishment therefore opening avenues for our own personal development.

Jeunne Schoales 1923-2019

Jeunne began painting in the late 1940’s in New York City. She studied at the Art Students League, Columbia University, and privately with Dong Kingman. Dong Kingman (1911-2000) is a world renowned Chinese American watercolourist, and she often spoke of him as being a great inspiration and influence on her development as an artist.

The paintings here represent the span of a life’s work. The style of her work changed and evolved over the years, however, she continued to be motivated by the beauty and vibrancy of colour, and the potential expressiveness and energy found in the natural world.

In 1976 Jeunne Schoales moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia with her husband Herb Schoales who was a music teacher, and jazz and classical musician. She loved the rugged beauty of nature in Nova Scotia which is evident in her artwork from this time.

Jeunne had a studio at Pier 21 for many years. She showed her work independently and participated in a number of group shows over the years. She also rented and sold her work through Nova Scotia Art Gallery Sales and Rental (now Teichert Gallery). Her work is in many private collections.

Melissa Schoales

Melissa Schoales

Melissa Schoales attended Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in the early eighties earning a BFA with a major in drawing and painting.

Over the years she has continued to explore various modes of expression experimenting with traditional and non-traditional materials. Her work has evolved from representational objects and landscapes to a more abstract approach with the aim to reveal something essential yet ephemeral and mysterious therefore looking towards what lies just beyond the surface.

Melissa Schoales has had several independent art shows and participated in group art exhibitions over the years. Her work is in many private collections and has been purchased by Nova Scotia Art Bank.

Emilie Johnston

While earning a degree in Occupational Therapy from McGill University in Montreal Emilie also studied dance and music and was generally inspired by the art milieu of that city. Returning to Nova Scotia she connected again with her grandmother, Jeunne Schoales, and was impressed by the comprehensive body of work and the beauty of her paintings. This prompted her to be interested in finding a way to provide a venue to showcase Jeunne’s work.
